Barry Sookman of McCarthy Tétrault will provide his popular annual update of significant developments in IT Law.

This program is eligible for up to 1.5 Substantive Hours under the mandatory CPD regime of the Law Society of Ontario. It is not eligible for any Professionalism Hours.

Lunch will be served at noon and the presentation will begin at 12:15 pm.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Barry Sookman is a senior partner with McCarthy Tétrault in the Toronto office. He is the former Co-Chair of the firm’s Technology Law Group and was the head of the firm’s Internet and Electronic Commerce Group. Prior to that, he was head of its Intellectual Property Group for six years. He is one of Canada’s foremost authorities in the area of information technology, Internet, intellectual property, and privacy/anti-spam law.

Barry is very experienced in providing advice in connection with complex information technology/intellectual property transactions including outsourcing and other strategic procurement relationships, cloud computing, SAAS, military procurement, joint venture transactions, and licensing. He has been involved as lead lawyer in Canada’s biggest and most complicated domestic and international outsourcing deals.  He has been involved as lead lawyer in Canada’s biggest and most complicated domestic and international outsourcing and cloud computing deals. He regularly acts on transactions which must meet regulatory requirements including the OSFI-B10 Outsourcing Guideline. He also provides advice in connection with protecting and exploiting intellectual property and new media products.

Barry is also very experienced in intellectual property and information technology litigation and arbitration proceedings. He is a leading Canadian blogger on copyright, Internet, information technology, privacy and CASL issues at his blog barrysookman.com which has been recognized in the 2012 and 2013 Clawbies.

Barry has consistently been ranked by authoritative Canadian and international guides as among Canada’s top information technology and intellectual property lawyers.

COST FOR ATTENDANCE

Cost for attendance: ten dollars ($10) for members and students, twenty dollars ($20) for non-members, payable at the meeting. Receipts will be available. Cheques should be made payable to the Toronto Computer Lawyers’ Group.

The fee for lunch will be waived for those who pay for their memberships for 2018-2019 at or prior to this Year in Review presentation.

MEMBERSHIP (2018-2019)

The cost of a 2018-2019 membership for lawyers is fifty-five dollars ($55), and articling students and law school students may join the TCLG free of charge by indicating that they are “students” on the membership application form. REGISTRATION

Please register before 10:00 am on June 10, 2018. Registrations will not be confirmed. Substitutions are permitted anytime. Registrants who do not attend and do not cancel or send a substitute may be invoiced for lunch. Please e-mail registrations or cancellations to: secretary@tclg.org.

The Toronto Computer Lawyers’ Group (TCLG) will be electing its new executive members for its 2018/2019 year at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2018 at McCarthy Tétrault.  Any current TCLG member is welcome to stand for election and to vote.  All nominations must be submitted to the TCLG Chair, Gabriel Stern at gstern@fasken.com, on or before June 10, 2018.  See the TCLG website for a list of the executive positions.
