In this program, our panelists will cover:
- recent developments and emerging trends in AI-related jurisprudence, including key decisions and issues arising under patent and copyright law, and AI governance frameworks;
- legal and commercial risks highlighted by the case law, and how those risks may affect organizations deploying or procuring AI technologies; and
- practical strategies to mitigate risks when drafting and negotiating contracts for AI-enabled platforms and services.
Following the program, there will be a short Q&A session.
Lunch will be served at noon and the presentation will begin at 12:30pm.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
May Cheng is a Partner at Dipchand LLP. May is an IP litigator who has represented clients in the federal and provincial courts on patent, trademark and copyright infringement cases, as well as expungement and injunction cases. Her clients span across a wide variety of industries, but particularly in retail, travel, fashion and food – all sectors that she happens to especially enjoy. While enjoying a reputation as a “fearless” advocate, May’s goal is to arrive at the best business solution for her clients, which is often not going to be achieved through protracted litigation. She prides herself on finding creative solutions to complex problems and having a deeper understanding of the underlying goals from nurturing long term relationships with her clients.
Sam Ip is a Partner and member of the Technology Group at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP. Sam regularly works with artificial intelligence companies and organizations making use of artificial intelligence technologies, and has advised them on evolving global standards and regulations, assessing potential risks and liabilities associated with emerging AI technologies, and identifying processes for integrating artificial intelligence risk management strategies into organizational activities. Sam’s practice also includes technology procurement, contracting, and other commercial and corporate matters, with a significant focus on advising clients on complex and thorny issues related to the use of data, blockchain technology, and open-source software.
Moderator: Marina Faheim is a technology and privacy lawyer at Inter Alia Law, whose practice focuses on commercial contracting for technology products and data protection. She advises organizations on structuring, negotiating, and managing complex commercial agreements, with a particular emphasis on technology-enabled services and data use. Her work includes helping clients address privacy compliance, data governance, and the legal considerations arising from the use of emerging technologies, including AI. A Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada (CIPP/C), Marina brings a strong foundation in privacy to her work, translating complex legal and regulatory requirements into clear, practical guidance that supports business objectives while managing risk.
COST FOR ATTENDANCE
Cost for attendance: fifteen dollars ($15) for members and students, twenty-five dollars ($25) for non-members, payable at the meeting. Receipts will be available. Cheques should be made payable to the Toronto Computer Lawyers’ Group.
