TOPIC

Senior corporate counsel discuss how the law related to technology fits into their practices by answering the following questions:

  1. Is it important for most corporate counsel to have some knowledge of law related to technology?
  2. To what extent do you see law relating to technology permeating other areas of your practice?
  3. What legal issues relating to technology were a significant part of your practice in the last twelve months?
  4. What legal issues relating to technology do you see being a significant part of your practice in the next twelve months?
  5. What do you know now that you wish you knew when you decided to go in-house?

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Richard Austin is Chief Legal Counsel for EDS Canada. Richard heads a team of lawyers, contract professionals and administrative staff with responsibility for the legal aspects of EDS’ business in Canada. After being called to the Bar in 1985, he worked for a Toronto-based law firm, Stikeman, Elliott, for six years. Richard left the firm to join EDS Canada in 1991. He is also a director and president of the Canadian IT Law Association.

Dougal Clark is a Chief Counsel at BMO Financial Group. He has been with the Bank for almost 13 years, following 6 years in private practice in Montreal at what was then Martineau Walker. He supports a variety of business areas in the Bank, many of which have technology issues.

Brenda MacDonald is the Assistant General Counsel with Bell Canada. Prior to joining Bell Canada in 1998, Ms. MacDonald was legal counsel for Abitibi Price. Her practice includes a broad range of corporate commercial matters, including IT outsourcing and sponsorship agreements. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1994.

Donald D. Henderson is Legal Counsel for Groove Media Inc.

COST FOR ATTENDANCE

Cost for lunch: $10 for members and students, $15 for non-members, payable at the meeting. Receipts will be available. Cheques should be made payable to the Toronto Computer Lawyers’ Group.
