TOPIC

Lisa Abe, a partner and one of the leading technology lawyers with Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, will discuss electronic payment and clearing systems including credit and debit card processing networks such as the Interac network.

Lisa’s presentation will provide an overview of the underlying technology, how the various systems interact with each other, who the players are, what contractual relationships exist between financial institutions, merchants, service providers, hardware and card providers and data processors, what rules and regulations apply and what the legal issues are that IT lawyers need to know when negotiating contracts between parties involved in e-payment systems.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Lisa Abe is a partner of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. Her expertise is in commercial transactions involving technology, including acquisition, sale, joint venture, outsourcing, licensing, hosting, development, distribution, service, maintenance, as well as advising on corporate policies, intellectual property (copyrights, patents, trade-marks, trade secrets), nanotechnology, open source, confidentiality, privacy, security, Internet, website and e-commerce issues. Lisa is a published author of several technology law books including the widely referenced Internet and E-Commerce Agreements: Drafting and Negotiating Tips, Web Law: Agreements, Guidelines and Use Policies and the IT Chapter in Doing Business in Canada, published by LexisNexis. She has been recognized by LEXPERT as a leader in Computer & IT Law and Technology Law. Lisa is also the Chair of the Canadian (Toronto) Chapter of the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals and Chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s IT & e-Commerce Section.

COST FOR ATTENDANCE

Cost for lunch: ten dollars ($10) for members and students, twenty dollars ($20) for non-members, payable at the meeting. Receipts will be available. Cheques should be made payable to the Toronto Computer Lawyers’ Group.
