The latest in data, AI and medical treatments all converge at Canadian MedTech companies. In this fireside chat, our speakers will unpack the legal and strategic challenges facing start-up and scaling MedTech companies, with a focus on transactions, health data management and intellectual property. Topics discussed will include considerations for companies with cross-jurisdictional operations, data sovereignty, health data de-identification, remediation strategies and key considerations for acquirers in MedTech acquisition transactions.
Lunch will be served at noon and the presentation will run from 12:30-1:30 pm.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Rosario Cartagena is the Chief Privacy and Legal Officer/Corporate Secretary at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). ICES is Ontario’s largest health services research and analytic / data institute and steward of data (both personal information and personal health information). She is also Special Counsel in Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP’s Privacy and Data Management group. Her practice is focused on health privacy law, health research, privacy and data governance, information security, risk management, AI frameworks and data ethics.
Aaraf Dewan is a technology lawyer and patent agent whose practice includes advising on IP strategy, commercial agreements, and mergers & acquisitions. He is a Senior Legal Counsel at Volaris Group, an operating group of Constellation Software Inc, one of the largest acquirers of vertical market software businesses. Aaraf leads the legal function for the Justice & Emerging Markets portfolio, where he advises software businesses within his portfolio on legal issues software businesses face across industries, including issues related to AI and health data processing.
The discussion will be moderated by Andrea Ngo (Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP).
COST FOR ATTENDANCE
Cost for attendance: fifteen dollars ($15) for members and students, twenty-five dollars ($25) for non-members, payable at the meeting. Receipts will be available. Cheques should be made payable to the Toronto Computer Lawyers’ Group.
